Ferulic acid is a hydroxycinnamic acid, a naturally occurring organic compound. It is an abundant phenolic phytochemical ingredient found in plants' cell wall components such as arabinoxylans as covalent side chains. It is related to trans-cinnamic. As a lignin component, Ferulic acid is a precursor in manufacturing other compounds, referring to the giant fennel (Ferula communis).

Phloretin is a dihydrochalcone, a natural phenol derived from apple tree leaves. Phloretin inhibits the active transport of glucose into cells. Orally consumed phlorizin is nearly entirely converted into phloretin by hydrolytic enzymes in the small intestine.
